September Favorites: Products, Podcasts, and More

In Favorites, Misc, Personal by MC1 Comment

Fall is close! Today is actually the first official day of fall. We had a really cool week in the beginning of the month, but now we are back to warm temperatures AND humidity. Ugh.

Since September is winding down, I thought it was the perfect time to highlight all the things I am loving this month.

Podcast: How Did This Get Made?

Some of the funniest comedians come together on this podcast where they watch and then discuss terrible movies. Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas are hilarious and even if I haven’t watched the movies, I love their back and forth and the way they describe scenes and events. The podcasts are enjoyable and take my mind off how much I have to run. I typically reserve these episodes for long run days.

Fun fact: I am going to see them record live in October. I can’t wait!

Book: My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry

I haven’t read a book in a while, but I brought this one by Fredrik Backman to the beach to read for book club. I could not put it down. I was sucked in from the very beginning. It is a heartwarming tale of a 7-year old who is a little bit different (and doesn’t have many friends) and her 77-year-old grandmother who is crazy and doesn’t care. It revolves around a treasure hunt of sorts and a made-up land that is full of crazy characters and adventures. I loved it and read it in 1.5 days. I highly recommend it!

Gear: Balega Ultralight No Show Socks

Good running socks are not easy to come by. Recently, I happened to see someone else wearing socks that looked really comfortable and found out they were Balega. So, when I bought my most recent pair of running shoes, I decided to try some. Potomac River Running Store usually has a sock of the month deal where it’s buy 3 get 1 free and that month the sock was Balega! I got the Ultralight No Show type and my feet were in heaven! These are seriously soft socks and don’t compress my feet too much, which is a problem I’ve had with Feetures.

Race: Hokie Half Marathon

I spent some of this month preparing for the Hokie Half marathon. I say ‘some’ because I just ran a 20k last month so I was already in half marathon shape and only did one or two 10 milers to prep for this one. It’s a race I have done before at my alma mater that I was really excited to do again. It ended up going great and you can read all about it and how I got a PR here.

Show: Great News

I tend to turn towards TV or Netflix shows as an escape from daily life so I’m always looking for new ones that are entertaining or gripping. I happened to find Great News on Hulu and liked it from the first episode. It’s a kind of hokey show about a news reporter whose mom ends up working at her TV station, but guys, it works. I like the characters and I am excited to see that Tina Fey will be on it when it comes back. Yes, it is similar to 30 Rock, but not in a way that bothers me. I’ve heard that criticism, but don’t agree with it. I love the quirkiness and the humor.

Celebration:Turbo’s Birthday

Our little pup turned one on the 21st! While we haven’t known him since he was a baby, we have known him since he was three months old and four pounds. Now he’s one and weighs ten pounds! Yesterday we spoiled him with a birthday treat and some new toys. Of course, the toy we got for Toby has also become Turbo’s. He was running around throwing toys like it was the best day of his life.

What have you loved in September? Any good new TV shows I should check out or books to read? Let me know in the comments!
